Throughout the year-long Capstone course, candidates consistently demonstrate dedication to the capstone philosophy of seeing the big picture of statistical analysis; embracing the importance of writing, communication, and research skills; strong work ethic; stepping up to provide leadership while being a team player; and demonstrating professionalism within the class and when working with his/her group’s client. Building upon the foundation of the Capstone philosophy, the University of Georgia Department of Statistics annually honors exceptional undergraduate students who embody these principles, by awarding them the Capstone Student Of the Year Award funded by Dr. Kermit Hutcheson. The awards are presented at the Capstone Poster Session, hosted in Brooks Hall at the end of the spring semester.

This year, the Department of Statistics is proud to announce that there are two co-winners! Congratulations to the co-winners of the 2024 Capstone Student Award, Anne Edwards and Rachel Memmel. Anne’s final Capstone project, “Analyzing seasonality of the sales of Creature Comforts Brewing Company's core brands”, which she produced with Jackson McKillip and Laria Bryant, focused on analyzing the effect that seasonality has on alcohol sales in the market. Rachel Memmel’s project, “The Impact of Conformity and Emotion on Responses to Gender Threats”, which she produced with Daniel Adamcik and Griffin Ramsey, focused on behavioral research into finding out if women’s femininity can be threatened in the same way as men, and whether they seek similar compensatory behavior as their male counterparts. Each will receive $500 as a reward for their exceptional work, both on these projects and in the greater Capstone as a whole.

Congratulations Anne and Rachel for your outstanding accomplishment!
