About Dr Bargmann:

Dr. Rolf E. Bargmann, born on May 13, 1921, in Berlin, Germany, dedicated his life to the pursuit of knowledge and excellence in the fields of mathematics and computer science. After his service as a court interpreter at the war crimes trials in Nuremberg, Dr. Bargmann's thirst for knowledge led him across the Atlantic to the United States. In 1955, he accepted a fellowship from the Rockefeller Foundation to further pursue his studies at the University of Chicago, at which he developed a love for the intricacies of mathematics and computer science. Dr. Bargmann's academic odyssey culminated with the attainment of a Ph.D. in statistics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1958. Armed with a wealth of knowledge and expertise, Dr Bargmann embarked on a series of academic and research positions, including a pivotal role with IBM, before he eventually became a statistics and computer science professor at the University of Georgia in 1965.

Dr Bargmann’s time at UGA was marked by a tireless dedication to teaching and mentorship, as he inspired countless students and others of his “academic children” to pursue excellence and innovation in their academic pursuits. Throughout his illustrious career, until his retirement in 1989, Dr Bargmann was a driving force in the lives of all his students, pushing them towards greatness every step of the way, eventually receiving the Sandy Beaver Award for teaching excellence in 1981. Even after stepping away from the podium, Dr. Bargmann's influence continued to shape the academic landscape, so much so that in 1998, his graduate students and UGA’s Dr. Robert Taylor chose to honor his profound impact by sponsoring a computer lab at the Statistics Department in his honor, ensuring that his legacy would continue to inspire future generations of scholars and researchers.

It is our hope that through the honoring of this lab and the incredibly generous donation from the Bargmann sisters, that Dr. Bargmann’s influence and passion will continue to drive and inspire UGA Stat students to achieve the peak of their academic potential. Dr Bargmann and the Bargmann lab’s enduring legacy serves as a beacon of excellence and a reminder of the transformative power of passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the pursuit of knowledge.

If you’d also like to make a contribution to the Bargmann Fund, all of which will be used to support the renovation and maintenance of the Bargmann Laboratory, and to provide support for graduate students, please follow this link.
