2017 CURO Summer Fellowship Awardee: Rachel A. Zilinskas University of Georgia Statistics major, Rachel A. Zilinskas, has been selected for the 2017 CURO Summer Fellowship. Rachel has loved Statistics ever since she took her first Stat class in High School. She is currently working with Dr. Mandal studying experimental design and also a student in the Terry College of Business earning a degree in Risk Management and Insurance. She will be working with Dr. Abhyuday Mandal on his collaborative research project with Dr. Suraj Sharma in the Department of Textiles, Merchandising, and Interiors. Two Statistics Students inducted into Phi Beta Kappa Two Statistics students have been asked to join Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest of all American honor societies. It is one of the most distinguished honors in academic circles to be invited to join the society. This year’s invitees include Andrew Goodman and Daniel Oltmann. Congratulations to these fantastic students! Those who choose to join Phi Beta Kappa will be honored at an initiation ceremony on Tuesday, December 6 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel on North Campus, with a reception following the ceremony. Sarah Robinson Wins "Outstanding Undergraduate Student Presentation Award" Statistics Major, Sarah Robinson, won the "Outstanding Undergraduate Student Presentation Award" at the International Conference on Advances in Interdisciplinary Statistics and Combinatorics, held in Greensboror, NC on September 30th- October 2nd, 2016. The award was for her presentation on her research on "Functional Data Analysis of Copy Number Alterations in Bladder Cancer Tumors". She performed this research during Computational Biology REU at UConn Health Center for Quantitative Medicine, in the Summer of 2016. Congratulations Sarah! UGA Department of Statistics Team Places 3rd in SAS Shootout Competition For the third year in a row, student groups from the Department of Statistics have earned high recognition at the SAS Analytics Shootout. This year, a team captained by Rich Ross and advised by Dr. Dan Hall have placed third in the SAS Shootout Competition in Las Vegas. Mark Werner Wins 10K Race! Let's all congratulate Dr. Mark Werner on his amazing acheivements in Colorado over the long Labor Day weekend. While we were enjoying Labor Day, Mark was busy competing in two races on two consecutive days at Rabbit Ears Pass, Colorado. He won the first race on Sunday, setting a new course record, and placed third on another race, Monday. In his usual humble way, Mark described his experience over the long weekend as: "It's all good, though, both myself and the local runners came away with some wins, so everybody was happy.".
