ASA Honors Jennifer Kaplan with the Jackie Dietz Best Journal of Statistics Education Paper Award

The Jackie Dietz Best Journal of Statistics Education Paper Award, established in 2011, is given annually to the best paper in the Journal of Statistics Education in the previous year. It is named in honor of Jackie Dietz, the founding editor of the journal. We are extremely proud of Jennifer J. Kaplan for receiving this honor. She was recognized for her collaborative work with John Gabrosek, Phyllis Curtiss, and Christopher J. Malone titled  “Investigating Student Understanding of Histograms,” published in the Journal of Statistics Education (Volume 22, Number 2, 2014).

Student Groups Place in Top Three in SAS Analytics Shootout

For the second year in a row, student groups from the Department of Statistics have placed in the top three in the SAS Analytics Shootout.  This year, two groups entered and both placed!  As noted by the competition organizers: "This year’s selection of winners was very difficult due to the large number of outstanding submissions." We are proud of our two teams and wish them both the best of luck.  The final results will be announced during the Analytics 2015 Conference to be held in Las Vegas in October 2015.

Fulbright Recognition with Stat's Own Christine Franklin and the New Zealand Ambassador

As many of you may know, our Undergraduate Coordinator Christine Franklin has been in New Zealand these past couple months. On June 22nd, she attended the Fulbright recognition at the New Zealand Parliament. It was certainly a special night. That Monday she flew to Wellington for the Fulbright award ceremony held at Parliament. She is currently the only U.S. scholar of five still in New Zealand. All nine of her graduate students were able to attend along with a policy Fulbrighter (Ziyad) and her. The Statistics Department is looking forward to her return in 2 weeks.

Mu Sigma Rho Induction 2015

Congratulations to the 2015 inductees to the Mu Sigma Rho Honor Society!  Mu Sigma Rho is the national honorary society for statistics. Its purpose is the promotion and encouragement of scholarly activity in statistics, and the recognition of outstanding achievement among the students and instructional staff in eligible academic institutions.

Congratulations to Theresa Devasia and Joshua Lukemire!

For the first time, the Best Capstone Student Award ended in a tie, with two winners, Theresa Devasia and Joshua Lukemire, sharing the 2015 award (and splitting the $500 cash prize).  With 32 (mostly highly motivated) students enrolled in this year’s Capstone (STAT 5010-5020) Course, it was not easy to select a ‘best’ student, and even selecting two co-winners was quite difficult.
