Congratulations to the 2015 inductees to the Mu Sigma Rho Honor Society! Mu Sigma Rho is the national honorary society for statistics. Its purpose is the promotion and encouragement of scholarly activity in statistics, and the recognition of outstanding achievement among the students and instructional staff in eligible academic institutions.
For the first time, the Best Capstone Student Award ended in a tie, with two winners, Theresa Devasia and Joshua Lukemire, sharing the 2015 award (and splitting the $500 cash prize). With 32 (mostly highly motivated) students enrolled in this year’s Capstone (STAT 5010-5020) Course, it was not easy to select a ‘best’ student, and even selecting two co-winners was quite difficult.
Congratulations to four of our undergraduates students for being elected to membership in the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. As the world's oldest and most widely known academic honor society, it is truly an honor for our students, Cody Baetz, Zhuoxi Li, Joshua Lukemire, and Joseph Powell, to be elected into such a prestigious society. This past fall, the honor society celebrated its 100th year on UGA's campus.
Third-year statistics major, Theresa Devasia's collaborated UGA's College of Public Health's Andreas Handel to research norovirus infections, sometimes know as the stomach flu. Working on this study, Devasia and Handel studied a large set of outbreaks of norovirus infections.
Several of our undergraduate Statistics majors participated in the 2015 CURO Symposium held at the Classic Center in Athens on March 30 and 31, 2015.
Samantha Cao and Andrew Kane made a poster presentation of their research supervised by Dr. Abhyuday Mandal, and Zachary Stokes made a poster presentation of his research supervised by Drs. Abhyuday Mandal and T. N. Sriram. We were glad to see President Jere Morehead stop by to learn about their work. Congratulations, Stat Majors!
Abhyuday Mandal's research study with Suraj Sharma of the department of textiles, merchandising, and interiors was featured in an article for UGA Today! The study, "Protein-based bioplastics and their antibacterial potential," is available online at http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/app.41931/abstract.
