Bachelor's Degree
I. Prerequisites for Becoming a Statistics Major
In order to be officially classified as a Statistics major and receive advising by the Department of Statistics, a student must have a minimum of 45 hours. The student should be working on the following prerequisites although it is not necessary to have all the pre-requisites (except Stat 2000) completed before taking statistics major courses:
a. STAT 2000 or STAT 2100H
b. CSCI 130-1301L
c. MATH 2250 (or MATH 2300H or MATH 2400H), MATH 2260 (or MATH 2310H or MATH 2410H), and MATH 2500 (or MATH 3510H). These courses are the Calculus 1-3 sequence and the student is required to have an average of 2.0 or higher for the three-course Calculus sequence.
Until a student has the minimum 45 hours, he/she will be advised by the Arts & Science advisors in Memorial Hall.
II. Major Course Requirements for the Bachelor of Science Degree Major
Required Courses - 22 hours
(A student must have a grade of "C" or higher for these courses.)
| STAT 4210 or STAT 4110H | Statistical Methods |
| STAT 4220 | Applied Experimental Designs |
| STAT 4230 | Regression Analysis Methods |
| STAT 4360 | Statistical Programming |
| STAT 4510 | Mathematical Statistics I |
| STAT 4520 | Mathematical Statistics II |
| STAT 5010 | Capstone I |
| STAT 5020 | Capstone II |
Major Electives - 3 hours
(A student must have a grade of "C" or higher for these courses.)
Students may choose three hours from among STAT 4000-level courses or specific MATH 3000/4000-level courses to complete the major. The MATH 3000/4000-level courses will be approved by the undergraduate coordinator. The STAT 4000-level courses can include the following:
| STAT 4100 | Applied Stochiastic Processes |
| STAT 4240 | Sampling |
| STAT 4260 | Statistical Quality Assurance |
| STAT 4280 | Applied Time Series |
| STAT 4290 | Nonparametric Methods |
| STAT 4380 | Survival Analysis |
| STAT 4630 | Stat Method Bioinformatics I |
| STAT 4640 | Stat Method Bioinformatics II |
III. Statistics Minor
The requirements for an undergraduate minor in statistics consist of a total of 15 semester hours of coursework. The required pre-requisite course is STAT 2000. The core requirement is STAT 4210, STAT 4220, and STAT 4230.
Then 6 additional elective hours of STAT courses numbered above 4000 are required. No course with a grade lower than C- can be used as a minor course. At least nine semester hours of the minor courses must be taken in residence.
